My Big Backyard

Wildlife can be found in my backyard. Some animals live there, and others just visit. And some are welcome, while others are not.

When the two groundhogs come out of their hole and nibble at the grass, I gawk at their cuteness. I've even given them names, which my brother finds childish. (His problem, not mine.)

But when the neighborhood deer start meandering through our yard, I become annoyed and somewhat angered. If no one is within earshot, I tend to spout insults at them and command them to die. Unfortunately, they have yet to gain an understanding of the English language and the ability to obey.

Perhaps it's a good thing the deer can't understand English... if they could they'd get mad at you and jump out in front of your car as you're trying to leave your house or something...

And aren't you going to share your names for the groundhogs?

"GG" and "The Other One"
(Whichever one I see first is GG and the other one becomes The Other One.)

I love the names, lol.

You don't like the deer? Really? Why not?

We have bunnies. And the puppy tries to play with them. She doesn't realize the bunnies don't want to be her friend.

The deer... Part of it is that they are a nuisance when they stand in the road when you're trying to drive on it. Part of it is the fact that in the last 15-20years they have increased in number and aren't as afraid of humans.

And part of it is that's just the way it is. It reminds me of the time I went to a Chinese lady's house with my aunt as a kid. We watched some of a Chinese western. There were the cats and the mice: two groups of people who fight the bad guys but don't get along. They never did and they never will. I asked her why, and she said that's just the way it is.

To live in Warsaw is to hate deer, they're just everywhere.

I used to work with a lady who lived on Center street nearing the downtown area - she wasn't anywhere near the woods, but she couldn't stop the deer from eating her garden.

Deer are less of a nuisance than ground hogs, at least they don't dig holes all over the yard.

My dad doesn't like the groundhogs either. He says the holes are dangerous. I say, if you see a hole, don't step in it! (And there's only one or two on the edge of our property, not smack dab in the middle.)

Melody, I think you have just come up with Warsaw's new slogan: "To live in Warsaw is to hate deer."

Signs should be made and posted everywhere. Could you design them?
